The motif of the work ``OHKA'' is the ``Kamikaze Weapon Ohka (cherry blossoms)’’ created during World War II, which used the latest rocket propulsion technology at the time, and instead of going to the distant space it was supposed to go to, it A young man in his 20s was on board, and it became a suicide weapon that headed straight for enemy ships and certain death.
It is the only "aircraft" in the world made for suicide attacks, and the cherry blossom is also a weapon that symbolizes the end of the war that Japan once waged.
This time, I used an actual newspaper from 1945 to the first half of 1945, which Ohka developed and put into action, to recreate its appearance in ``real size.''
Why is it the actual size? It has a visual impact that makes you feel ``big!'' or ``surprisingly small,'' and it is easier to feel the reality that ``this was actually used as a kamikaze weapon 77 years ago'' than a miniature, and the surface makes it easier to feel. It is also possible to understand the historical background of the period by looking at the newspapers from the time that are pasted on them.
In addition, this time's cherry blossoms are balloons that are inflated with air, but the balloon production technique is also a traditional Japanese technique, and during the war, the balloon bomb was a weapon made using Japanese paper and konnyaku glue. It also uses the same material.
(During the war, balloon bombs were completely unmanned weapons that flew across the Pacific Ocean and then the west coast of the United States. One of the balloon bombs was caught in a tree and exploded when a picnicking citizen touched it, killing six people. A citizen died.)
Not only do you feel the impact of seeing this vivid figure in real size, but you can also glimpse the records of the time engraved on its surface, and learn not only about what happened in the past, but also about the current situation and the future of this world. I think it will be an opportunity to think about and remember the future.

「OHKA」と言う作品のモチーフは、第二次大戦時に作られた「特攻兵器 桜花」であり、当時最新のロケット推進技術が使われ、本来いくべきはずの遠い宇宙へ行くのでなく、そこにまだ20代そこそこの若者が搭乗し、敵艦へ向かって確実な死へ直行していく自爆兵器となった。
それは世界で唯一特攻のために作られた「航空機」であり、そして桜花は、日本がかつて起こした戦争、その末路の象徴でもある兵器である。
その姿を私は今回桜花が開発、実戦投入された昭和19〜20年前半の新聞の実物を使用し、「実物大」でその姿を再現した。
なぜ実物大か、「大きい！」と感じたり「意外と小さい」などの視覚的インパクト、そして「実物は77年前にこれが特攻兵器として使われていた」という現実をミニチュアよりも感じやすく、表面に貼られている当時の新聞により、その時代背景も読み解くこともできるのである。
また、今回の桜花は空気で膨らむバルーン となっているが、そのバルーンの制作技法は、日本の伝統技術でもあり、戦時中「気球爆弾」という、和紙とコンニャク糊を使用して作られた兵器と同じ素材を使用してもある。
(戦時中気球爆弾は完全無人兵器として太平洋を飛び、アメリカ西海岸飛んで行った。その一つが木に引っかかっていた気球爆弾の不発弾にピクニックをしていた市民が触れた際爆発、6名の市民が亡くなった。)
この生々しい姿を実物大で見ることによって感じるインパクトだけでなく、その表面に刻まれた当時の記録を垣間見ることにより、過去起こったことだけでなく、現在起こっている事態、これからのこの世界の行く末を考え、思い出すきっかけになるんではないかと思う。
